Name and briefly describe three levels of measurement. Why do you need to know the level of measurement of a variable when you are analyzing data?
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: The three levels of measurement discussed in the text are nominal, ordinal, and interval. With the nominal level, you place people into categories which have no order. With the ordinal level, you place people into categories that have an order. When you have measured a variable at the interval level, the study subjects have a number that denotes numerical value, such as age as measured in years. The main reason you need to know the level of measurement of your study variables is that you must know this information in order to select a statistic for testing your study hypothesis.
Learning Objective: 16-2: Identify descriptive statistics that you can use to describe variables based on their level of measurement.
