In 2013 a woman with a small business at home is going to buy a desktop computer to handle her correspondence and diary/calendar, to allow her to email colleagues and to deal with her tax. Being a sensible person, she decides to get the best computer she can afford and Googles “computer performance”. Should she use clock speed, MIPS, or SPEC as a metric?

What will be an ideal response?

We have already ruled out clock speed and MIPS as reasonable metrics because they take no account of the architecture of the processor. SPEC is widely used in the academic world and has some merit. However, the key to this question is the time (the present) and the applications (general, domestic, Internet based). All contemporary computers can handle all these applications well. Pure performance is unlikely to be an issue in this case. Factors such as reliability, expandability, compatibility are going to be more important for this application than pure processing speed.
