What factors contribute to the development of cancer cachexia?

The combined effects of a poor appetite, accelerated and abnormal metabolism, and the diversion of nutrients to support tumor growth result in a lower supply of energy and nutrients at a time when demands are high. Cancer cachexia is characterized by anorexia, weight loss, muscle wasting, anemia, and fatigue. It develops in up to 50 percent of cancer patients and is responsible for as many as 20 percent of cancer deaths.
