Describe the effects of maltreatment on academic performance at both the primary school ages and the secondary school ages.

What will be an ideal response?

Overall, children who are victims of maltreatment are less successful in school compared to non-
victimized youth. The effects are different for both the primary school aged and the secondary school
aged children. For primary school aged children, cognitive and language delays are greater for victims of
maltreatment. On average, maltreated children enter school one-half year behind their peers. Also, they
have poorer academic performance, functioning, and verbal abilities at ages six and eight. They have
higher rates of absenteeism which also affects their academic performance. Children who experience
maltreatment at an early age may demonstrate behavioral issues and increased participation in special
education programs. A large percentage of the children in foster care (30–50%) have a diagnosed special
education disability and are likely behind their peers in reading and mathematical ability. For secondary
school age students, maltreatment has an effect on their academic outcomes as well as their social
development and peer relationships. Older adolescents are often three to four grade levels behind their
peers in terms of reading ability and repeat at least one grade level more often than non-maltreated
peers. Maltreatment also affects the likelihood that a youth will complete high school.
