What is a tunneling wound? What risk factors are associated with tunneling?
What will be an ideal response?
Tunneling wounds have channels or passageways that extend from a wound into and through the
surrounding subcutaneous tissue or muscle. They often are difficult to treat, might persist for long
periods, and increase the risk of infection. They are commonly associated with infections, pressure
ulcers, nonhealing wounds, or improperly dressed wounds, including those that were dressed with
materials that dehydrate wounds or were packed with too much or too little packing.
