How would you go about setting up a portfolio system to assess your students? literacy development?

What will be an ideal response?

These steps may be included in creating a portfolio system:
1 Decide on the type(s) of portfolio to use (showcase, evaluation, documentation, process, or composite), depending on the goals and materials involved.
2 Help students organize their work early on by having them list their goals, write a summary, or fill out a form.
3 Collect a wide variety of samples that are representative of key areas.
4 Be specific, including writing samples, lists of books read, records, reading inventories, and student self-evaluations.
5 Include pieces from different times of the year, for most types of portfolios.
6 Include rough drafts as well as finished work.
7 Add student lists of their goals, the pieces included, what was learned, and where they can improve in the future.
8 Review portfolios periodically, keeping in mind original goals and possibly using a checklist.
