Weep holes are openings left in the head joints of masonry to permit water to escape and allow air circulation in the air space. Moisture that enters the cavity moves to the flashing and is directed out of the building through the weep holes. Weep holes are located just above the bottom of the flashing. Weeps are formed by omitting mortar in head joints, with pieces of plastic or metal pipe located in the bottom of a joint, or by placing oiled rope in the joint and pulling it out after the mortar begins to set. Weep holes should be spaced at 24 in. horizontally in the outer wythe of the wall, although a maximum spacing of 16 in. is recommended for weeps using wick ropes. Mesh type mortar dropping collection materials are used behind the weep to prevent mortar droppings from blocking the opening as the wall is laid.
