The Pennsylvania System was also called the separate and silent system because inmates were isolated from each other in individual cells and required to maintain silence at all times. The Auburn system was also called the congregate and silent system because inmates were allowed to work together in silence during the day and housed in individual cells at night. Because prisoners could work during the day the Auburn prison system had greater potential for profitability and therefore became the preferred system in the United States.
