?Aluminum windows are made from extruded aluminum structural members. Since aluminum is easy to work, complex unit designs are readily produced. Aluminum has good structural properties and resists corrosion and damage from weather. Various organic protective coatings can be applied in areas where damage may occur. It can also be colored using anodized finishes.
The frames of aluminum windows are provided with a thermal break, an insulating material in the sash members that reduces the flow of heat either inward or outward. Aluminum windows are assembled using both mechanical connections and welding. Any connectors, fasteners, hardware, or anchors must be aluminum or a material (such as stainless steel) that is compatible with aluminum so corrosion does not occur from galvanic action.
Several aluminum alloys are used in the manufacture of aluminum windows. These affect the properties of a product and vary with the purpose for which a window will be used.
