A PTA group at a school has invited you to speak to parents about how they can develop creative thinking in their children. What would you tell them in your presentation?
What will be an ideal response?
Parents would learn that creativity is defined as the ability to use all resources available to think divergently about problem-solving. Parents can do much to encourage creativity by optimizing the family home environment. A popular viewpoint on creativity is that it is the application of divergent thinking--this could be illustrated to parents with sample exercises, which allow many possible solutions. Creativity training is best begun young, while the child is in preschool. Exercises such as imaginative storytelling, dance, sculpting, or painting may be helpful. Some games or toys encourage divergent thinking, and these could be described. The parent could encourage independent self-discovery learning, risk-taking, curiosity, and nonjudgmental conversation to foster the creative frame of mind.
