Cari’s senior English class studied British literature the whole year. She enjoyed the class, but it was a lot of work because she was required to read many different works and write a research paper. Her teacher assigned the poems Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard, My Last Duchess, Kubla Khan, Ode on a Grecian Urn, and Musée des Beaux Arts. The class also read two short stories by D. H. Lawrence called Odour of Chrysanthemums and The Rocking-Horse Winner. After the short stories, the class read the novels Jane Eyre, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, and Gulliver’s Travels. Cari had to write a research paper about the novel Jane Eyre for her last assignment. She read many articles, but her favorite, Jane’s Journey, was taken from a British literary journal called Pembernook. She enjoyed the class so much that she majored in English when she went to college.
