What type of epithelium would one expect to compose the alveoli (air sacs) in the lungs? Defend your answer.

What will be an ideal response?

Since gases must diffuse across the alveoli and associated capillaries you would expect to find exchange epithelia, composed of very thin cells (simple squamous epithelium). Thicker types of epithelial cells would slow the process of gas diffusion to and from the blood.
