In what ways did World War I affect the lives of African Americans?

What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER: Most students will recognize that opportunities that had not existed in peacetime opened up in cities. The result was that black migration to cities greatly accelerated. Most students will also recognize that black soldiers gained an opportunity to achieve recognition. Better students will also discuss the tensions that resulted from black migration into cities and the growth of white racism. Superior students will see the connection between black achievement and the sense of militancy expressed by Du Bois and McKay.
