The American Automobile Association reports an increase of 5 percent in auto travel
route information over last year. AAA concludes that 84 percent of all American travelers
will travel by car rather than airplane, train, or bus.
What will be an ideal response?
(Inductive generalization. The sample on which the generalization about all
Americans is based consists of an unstated number of people who sought travel
information from AAA during the previous year. The sample is unlikely to be
representative specifically because it consists of AAA members who may have certain
characteristics disproportionately compared with the general population: they are
car owners, travelling by car is important enough to them that they belong to an
automobile association, they are more likely to plan their trips ahead of time, and
they may be less likely to travel by train or bus. One wonders about interviewer bias
in this study, also.)
