Identify one actor from each component of the criminal justice system. Discuss how the ethical decision-making of these actors can have lasting ramifications for others.
What will be an ideal response?
Ethics in criminal justice is an especially important topic today considering the power granted to those who control the justice system. To be society’s instrument of social control, the justice system exerts power over people’s lives, and the system and its agents have the authority to deny people their personal liberty on a routine basis. Without ethical decision-making, certain constitutional rights will be threatened. Examples include a police officer’s ability to arrest and use force, a judge’s ability to sentence, and a correctional administrator’s ability to punish an inmate. These abilities give these individuals considerable personal power that must be governed by ethical considerations.
