There are three causes of cache miss: compulsory, capacity, and conflict. Define the meaning of these terms and briefly explain what can be done to minimize their effect.

Compulsory misses are easiest to explain. These are the initial misses when the system is powered up or a new
task begun after a cache flush. Initially, the cache is empty and each memory reference must generate a cache
miss – hence the word compulsory (perhaps a better term might be startup misses). You can’t do anything
about compulsory misses. Well, perhaps you can. You could include cache state as part of a program’s code and
load the cache with pre?start data.
Capacity misses occur when the cache is full and a miss takes place when there is no room for data. Obviously,
you can reduce capacity misses by having a larger cache.
