What is the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)? What is ALEC's stance on market-based reforms and what does ALEC do to advertise the success of states that support these reforms?
What will be an ideal response?
ALEC is an organization that recommends specific legislation to its members who then sponsor that legislation in their states. ALEC drafts legislation on many issues related to its conservative mission, many of which are about PK-12 education. In fact, ALEC has a special task force on education, which focuses on teacher tenure, privatization of education, and collective bargaining. In a 2013 ALEC Report Card on American Education: Ranking State K-12 Performance, Progress, and Reform ( Ladner & Myslinski, 2013 ), the authors graded every state on how its market- based initiatives are enacted into state policies including the following: academic standards, charter school laws, private school choice, teacher quality policies, and online learning options.
