Explain what causes the growth ridges found on the shells of bivalves.

What will be an ideal response?

Growth ridges result from the deposition of material during periods of restricted winter growth. Since successive layers of materials are deposited between periods of little growth, these layers build up to form an annual ridge similar to the dark growth rings representing restricted winter or dry season growth in trees.
