The African slave trade on which the British colonies became so dependent in the 1600s and 1700s was originally created to provide slave labor for colonial Brazil in the 1500s. In what ways were slave experiences gendered? How were these slaves different than British American slaves?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers may vary but students should discuss that most formerly enslaved women worked as domestic servants. Women were also often sexually abused by their masters, and were regarded as useful for their reproductive capabilities. Brazilian slaves were freed at a much higher rate than British American slaves were, and there was a large class of free Blacks and mulattos filling virtually every job and position available in the society.
