A proteome is the set of all proteins that can be encoded by a genome.
Proteomics identifies and characterizes all the proteins present in a cell, tissue, or organ at a particular time. Proteomics is a rapidly developing field with several crucial roles:
• Understanding gene function and its changing role in development and aging.
• Identifying proteins that are biomarkers for diseases. These proteins can be used in developing diagnostic tests.
• Finding proteins that are targets for the development of drugs to treat diseases and genetic disorders.

Proteomics and gene expression profiles provide information for the diagnosis and treatment of disease and are becoming a routine part of medical care.

Structural genomics derives three-dimensional structures for proteins; therefore, this information is crucial for studying protein function.
Pharmacogenomics analyzes genes and proteins to identify targets for therapeutic drugs; therefore, proteomics helps to study potential protein drug targets.

In studying any genetic disorder, several important questions must be answered:
Where is the gene located?
What is the normal function of the protein encoded by this gene?
How does the mutant gene or protein produce the disease phenotype?
To answer these questions, proteomics is used to study the protein associated with the disorder.
