Outline the physiological process of alcohol absorption and metabolism.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary but should include a description of the absorption through the oral mucosa, the stomach and the small intestine. Metabolism takes place primarily in the liver through the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase that breaks the alcohol into acetaldehyde. This is further broken down by the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase to the byproduct Acetate and eventually to water and carbon dioxide. Between 2 and 10% is not metabolized at all and is excreted through urine, sweat and breath.
