health, and reduce stress.
• Muscle strength refers to the maximum force exerted by
muscles during activity. Strength-building activities such

can improve muscle strength.
• Endurance refers to the ability to exercise for an extended
period of time without becoming fatigued. Sustained
activities such as jogging and swimming can improve
endurance.
• Flexibility refers to the range of motion around a joint.
Yoga, stretching, and swimming can improve flexibility.
• Body composition refers to the relative amounts of muscle,
fat, and bone in the body. A variety of activities can result in
alterations in body composition. Body fat can be decreased
by engaging in cardiovascular exercise. Muscle mass can be
increased by resistance-training activities. Finally, weight
bearing activities will help to increase bone mass.
