Why does a nation like Saudi Arabia have a high overall HDI but scores poorly on gender equality issues?
What will be an ideal response?
There is a general correlation between HDI and gender equality. Sometimes, however, a country may have a reasonably high HDI, which is a positive, but may also have a relatively high gender inequity score (such as the case in Saudi Arabia. This may occur when a country is wealthy, perhaps due to a particular resource, and is able to convey many social benefits to its citizens, but at the same time a conservative culture may produce a high gender inequality rating.
