For The Continuing Presence of the Past: Joseph Beuys’s Untitled I: Beuys’s work pushes the boundaries of what might be considered art. How does the vitrine itself help to put his work into an artistic context?

What will be an ideal response?

Beuys’s vitrines are collections of leftover objects from the artist’s studio that evoke political and social change. Further, they reflect the artist’s biography and become reliquaries of his life and previous works. In this way, these collections of mundane and impermanent objects connect the artist and his art to the medieval practice of collecting reliquaries and producing beautiful works of art in which to display them.
