The coastal wetlands are losing soil at an alarming rate. In Louisiana, it is estimated that 24 mi2 of wetlands are lost each year, which equates to one football field every 38 minutes. Why is the loss of these wetlands so critical?

What will be an ideal response?

The loss of wetlands is a critical issue not only to the State of Louisiana, but to the nation. The wetlands serve as nurseries for many species of organisms, such as shrimp and redfish. As wetlands decrease, Louisiana's economy, which profits from the sale of seafood, could be severely impacted. There may also be less seafood available throughout the country. The wetlands also serve as protection against storm surges from hurricanes. As more wetlands are lost, more severe flooding has and will continue to occur in Louisiana.
