Pruritus is usually associated with jaundice. What will you do to ease this problem for P.M.?

Name five interventions.

• Provide light, loose covers and clothing.
• Maintain a cool room temperature with a humidifier if possible.
• Place cool compresses on itchy areas.
• Apply soothing emollients such as oatmeal, baking soda, or cornstarch in warm bath water. Also
apply creams or lotions regularly to prevent itching followed by scratching.
• Use mild soap only.
• Dry skin thoroughly after bathing by patting, not rubbing.
• Avoid bathing so frequently that the skin becomes dry and flaky. Do not use excessively hot water;
water should be comfortably warm.
• Teach P.M. relaxation techniques.
• Use distraction (e.g., videos, TV, music, sports discussions).
• Warn him not to use fingernails to scratch.
• Show him how to wash his hands.
• Use of topical corticosteroids might help. These require an order in the hospital but can be bought
over the counter (OTC) outside of the hospital.
• Obtain an order for an antihistamine to help prevent or relieve itching. A nonsedating medication
is preferred during the day; one that has side effects of sedation is more acceptable at night. Teach
patient about this side effect and also about its "drying effects."
