How are sexual addiction and compulsion defined?
What will be an ideal response?
Sexual addiction is somewhat controversial, but generally, it is related to excessive and ambivalent
behaviors, causing strong conflict and negative consequences. In clinical practice, they are mostly
manifested as feelings of being out of control. Sexual arousal activates the same centers (dopaminergic)
as addictive drugs; however, while prolonged use of addictive drugs will lead to physiological addiction
in all cases, it is not the case for sex. Still, it seems that basal ganglia play an important role. It is
important to add that sexual addictions are not correlated with an abnormally high sex drive.
