Provide a brief argument for the following statement: “single-celled protists are complex”
What will be an ideal response?
There are a number of intracellular structures in some single-celled protists, and some of these
structures are not found in any other living organisms. The cell must carry out all of the functions of
the organism, and this is often controlled by specialized structures. For example, a single-celled protist
may control water movement in and out of the cell (contractile vacuole), digest prey (food vacuoles),
and move (flagella, pseudopodia, or cilia).
