Discuss existentialism and the schools.
What will be an ideal response?
For the most part, one does not think of using existential theory with helping school students; however, Carlson (2003) has pointed out that existentialism provides a foundation for understanding and intervening with youth at risk for violent behavior. School therapists can understand potentially violent youth using the existential lens of meaninglessness, isolation, freedom, and anxiety. Violent perpetrators engage in violence because they may be struggling with issues of meaningless, isolation, and belonging.
School administrators need to take into account the extent to which the school climate helps to create a sense of existential isolation and anxiety. To what extent are students encouraged to live an authentic life? Schools can help youth deal with making decisions/choices and with learning how to accept responsibility for their choices.
