How did technology transform the battlefields of World War I?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. The technology developed in the Second Industrial Revolution was paramount to the campaigns in World War I. The last large-scale war had been fought during the Napoleonic battles, and while there was new technology to utilize in war, it was relatively untested, and new strategies had not been developed to take advantage of these new weapons. Because of the developments in the Second Industrial Revolution, particularly in steel technology and chemical discoveries, advances in military technology included the use of machine guns, poison gas, incendiary long-range devices, and even airplanes for battle. Submarines were also used, and transportation of troops made the far-flung battles of Europe easier to reach. Changes in medical technology meant x-rays and improved sanitary conditions in field hospitals.
