Discuss the different types of periodontal bone loss
What will be an ideal response?
There are two patterns of bone loss: horizontal and vertical. The width of the interdental septum will usually determine which pattern of bone loss will occur. Horizontal pattern of bone loss occurs when bone is destroyed equally on both sides of adjacent teeth (e.g., distal of one tooth and the mesial of the adjacent tooth) whereas vertical pattern of bone loss occurs when there is more bone destroyed on one surface than the other surface. Within the vertical pattern of bone loss there are different types of bony defects that occur interproximally: one-, two-, and three-wall defects and circumferential defects (where bone loss "wraps" around from the interproximal surface to the direct facial or lingual).
