The state of Iowa is in the temperate grassland (prairie) while much of the neighboring state of Wisconsin is in the deciduous forest. Why are these two states in different biomes?

What will be an ideal response?

The best answers should include a discussion of precipitation and temperature as the primary determining factors for biome distribution. However in this case the students need to realize that deciduous trees need more moisture to exist than prairie grasses. Historically Iowa received less rainfall than Wisconsin, therefore prairie plants were selected for rather than deciduous trees.
