There are many options for drug offenders placed in the community. The more intensive options are residential treatment programs. These include both large treatment facilities or smaller halfway houses designed to provide both rehabilitation and housing. These programs often assist with job placement and education services. Some offenders transition into a sober living facility, which tends to be less structured, but still provides supportive housing. Offenders can also attend a day reporting program, where he must report during the day for treatment and educational services, but then go home at night. Drug court is another community-based option that is fairly intensive, as offenders attend court on a regular basis so that the judge can monitor the person's progress. Offenders can also attend Intensive Outpatient drug treatment in the community without the structure of a drug court. Here, the person would attend treatment several hours a week, focusing on his or her drug problem. Finally, individuals might attend AA or NA for additional community support.
