Citing specific examples, show how playwrights have used comedy as a means of critiquing society in its own time
What will be an ideal response?
• Aristophanes, the first great comic writer in the Western tradition, turned his comic lens on the artists, philosophers, politicians, and even the gods of his time. Each of his plays begins with a prologue addressed to the audience to get them in the comic mood, followed by a debate over some current issue of interest that sets out the comic premise for the play. Many of the comedies of Aristophanes satirize the social and political concerns of an Athenian society stressed by the seemingly endless Peloponnesian War.
