How have selective pressures altered the expression of the LDH-B gene among populations of killifish living along the eastern coast of North America?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Different alleles for the LDH-B gene exist in the killifish populations with different levels of expression. One allele predominates in northern populations; another predominates in southern populations. Due to mutations in the promoter, the northern allele is expressed at two fold higher levels to compensate for the effects of temperature on enzyme activity.
