Answer: Different alleles for the LDH-B gene exist in the killifish populations with different levels of expression. One allele predominates in northern populations; another predominates in southern populations. Due to mutations in the promoter, the northern allele is expressed at two fold higher levels to compensate for the effects of temperature on enzyme activity.
