Analyze the role of the family in Roman life in light of the concept of paterfamilias.

Answers will vary. The family was the mainstay of social organization within Rome, and the father's word was law within his household. He was the ultimate authority, literally determining life or death for the members of the household. His control extended to his daughters in marriage, allowing them to be completely under the authority of their husbands, or allowing them a means to live independently upon his own death, provided they spend at least three nights a year away from their husbands' house. The family values protected the members of the family, as well as property for the family's benefit.
