Describe and explain the 5 attributes associated with culturally competent social work practice and evaluation work.
What will be an ideal response?
The 5 attributes are: (1) Awareness and acceptance of others: awareness of the diversity of the staff, the agency, and the clients or consumers of the program, including accepting persons of diverse backgrounds and with diverse characteristics and treating them in a respectful and nonjudgmental manner. (2) Self-awareness: awareness of one’s own attributes and how they have shaped his/her personal and professional life, approach to work and evaluation and relationships. This includes having the ability to self identify, examine, control and/or change one’s assumptions, beliefs, and stereotypes, as well as adapting an attitude of “learning from” vs. “learning about” others’ perspectives. (3) Dynamics of difference: understanding historical experiences and resulting messages transmitted through generations of diverse individuals, including an understanding of power and powerlessness clients may bring to an agency. This also includes an understanding of one’s own privilege, as well as a sense of humility and openness to learning about others’ perspectives. (4) Knowledge of individual cultures: understanding the specific cultural groups or communities of the clients or key informants of a program, including identifying and using cultural resources that will assist in this process. (5) Adaptation of skills: determining if his/her methods and approaches are culturally appropriate or respectful of the programs and individuals subject to the evaluation.
