Explain the “mountain climber syndrome.”

What will be an ideal response?

This pattern of decision-making has been described as one in which we feel compelled to spend thousands of dollars to save a stranded mountain climber, even though many more lives could be saved if the same amount of money were spent on highway accident prevention. It is virtually impossible to say no to stranded mountain climbers and their families, although if the appropriate ethical criterion is to save as many lives as possible, that is perhaps what we should do.
