Compare the different types of memory discussed in the chapter.
What will be an ideal response?
Sensory memory refers to a brief period of time in which individuals can remember the most recent sensory information, such as visual or auditory input. This memory lasts only a few seconds, at most. Short-term memory is memory for a slightly longer duration, up to a few minutes. Long-term memory is theoretically memory that can last a lifetime. A long-term memory can be broken up into two different categories-declarative and nondeclarative. Declarative memories are memories about which we can speak facts, knowledge, and experiences we have had. Nondeclarative refers to procedural or implicit memory in which we can demonstrate memory but are unable to discuss that memory. For instance, knowing how to ride a bike is implicit procedural knowledge; one cannot explain to another how to ride a bike. Balance is not a skill that can be taught verbally.
