Jails have high rates of communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, STDs, hepatitis, and the measles. Inmates also suffer from chronic diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, renal/liver disease, and lung disease. Often times, inmates also have alcohol and drug addiction, which requires medical care when they enter jail and go through withdrawal. Pregnant inmates require prenatal care. Finally, many jail inmates are mentally ill and have suicide ideations.
