Describe the ethical dilemma social workers face in assessing older adults who may self-harm.

What will be an ideal response?


Social workers are mandated to report situations in which the person expressed intention to harm themselves or others. In the case of suicide ideation clients should be informed of needs to share the information for protection (mandate to report), but not frightened by a threat of mandate d reporting so as to cut off their honest communication about intent. Confidentiality however, is suspended in these cases.
