Please briefly discuss both the pros and cons of the construction of the Diamer-Bhasha Dam in Pakistan
What will be an ideal response?
The construction of the dam has several positive benefits. The dam will generate enormous amounts of electricity to meet the surging demand within Pakistan and will also reduce Pakistan's carbon footprint. The dam can also retain floodwaters from the monsoon which can be released to alleviate drought during the dry season. The dam construction also poses a series of challenges. The location of the dam is in a geopolitical hotspot which could raise tensions with rival India. Many rural villages will also need to be relocated, resulting in people being dispossessed of their land. The price tag of the dam is beyond the ability for Pakistan to finance it, leaving the nation at the mercy of foreign creditors for completion.
