Answers will vary. Descartes came of age amidst a crisis of thought based on the Protestant-Catholic schism. Some maintained that since no human opinion could ever be shown to be definitively true, one had to take a leap of faith and submit to the authority of the church and its teachings. Others embraced a thoroughgoing skepticism about the truth of any human argument. Descartes turned to the individual, and questioned received knowledge to an extreme point which culminated in his famous postulation "I think, therefore I am." His work continued with his influential Discourse on Method, which introduced deductive reasoning (based on geometric principles) to the world and relied on the supremacy of human reason to augment knowledge and understanding, a gift from the Christian God.
