Why is studying transracial, intercounty adoption sociologically relevant?
What will be an ideal response?
Written within constructionsof racial desirability are constructions of undesirability. The interpretations and constructions of racial and gender desirability are, in large part, contingent upon and reflective of the preferences of the adopters. While parents’ preferences for certain children might be framed as matters of individual choice and personal taste, focusing on their choices as merely individual preferences or private decisions leaves issues of larger social structures, such as racism and white privilege, unchallenged. It is critical to realize that individual choices and preferences are inextricably linked and indeed embedded in broader social, cultural, and historical contexts—families and adoption do not occur outside of or independent from other sociohistorical forces. Parental decisions and inclinationsfor whites and Asians, and an avoidance of adopting blacks and Latinos, canbe understood within larger sociohistorical contexts and processes.
