In order to complete genetic testing during pregnancy, there are two ways that fetal cells can be collected

Name each of these two procedures and explain the difference between the two ways that the cells are extracted and what type of cells each procedure is attempting to procure.
What will be an ideal response?

Students' answers will vary but should contain an understanding of the following: With amniocentesis, a needle is inserted through the mother's abdomen and into the amniotic sac. Amniotic fluid is withdrawn, containing cells sloughed off from the fetus. With chorionic villus sampling (CVS), either a catheter is inserted through the vagina and into the uterus to take placental villus cells or the villus cells are extracted using a needle inserted into the placenta.
