High-frequency words are those most commonly found in print. About 200 words make up 60 percent of the text in books and materials used by children, and they help create a more natural-sounding text. They are some of the oldest words of the English language, so they may have ?irregular? spellings that don?t represent their sounds or pronunciations. At one time it was thought that they were memorized visually, so they were put on flash cards. But recent research shows that even irregular words are learned phonologically. So copying them, spelling them, and studying flash cards can reinforce high-frequency words, but the single activity that teaches them best is reading in context, when they are seen in their natural setting within the context of a story.
