Explain why eating disorders are not entirely caused by societal factors such as the availability of increasingly thin role models.
What will be an ideal response?
Eating disorders exist in non-Westernized societies and have been documented for 300 years, before modern cultural standards of beauty existed. There is also evidence for genetic risks for disordered eating. Heritability for eating disorders ranges from 45-83%, depending on the disorder. Genes for serotonin and dopamine receptors have been associated with anorexia, a serotonin transporter gene has been linked to binge eating disorder, and estrogen and cannabinoid genes have been linked to bulimia. Hormonal changes and stress during adolescence may also result in epigenetic changes to dopamine genes linked to anorexia and bulimia.
