Cultural relativism drives how emotions (positive and/or negative) should be experienced and displayed; they may also guide how people choose to regulate their emotions, ultimately influencing an individual's emotional experience. In a nutshell, culture defines what triggers emotions Cultural contexts also act as cues when people are trying to interpret facial expressions.

On the biological scale, emotions are characterized by the activity of multiple areas of the brain where these brain components form a complex network of neuronal circuits whose detailed structure and function are not yet understood.
