A beginning learner is becoming more aware of how letters and sounds work, and with developing comprehension comes a growing awareness that there are rules to how letters and sounds work. He or she is losing the "anything goes" type of reading and writing and growing into the idea that he or she can use strategies to work through reading and writing difficulty.
