Discuss the Narrative Portrait entitled the Dynamics of Racial Hatred. What is Brian Patterson's story?
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. Brian Patterson was the product of a racist father. He became involved with racist groups and a variety of hate crimes. He learned racist behavior from his family as both his father and grandfather were associated with the KKK. Violence was very routine for him. He became socialized to support the KKK and racist ideologies. He participated in beating strangers to deter minorities from entering white "superior" neighborhoods. He ultimately finds himself homeless and alone. He was taken in by an African American man who provided him with warmth and food, despite seeing Brian's visual representation of his support for the KKK. Brian states that it was then he realized that his behavior was a result of socialization, not actual biological differences.
